The topography of the province is quite flat with a sloping tendency from North to South and West to East; separating into two large regions: one in the North of Tien River (having an area of 250,731ha, in Dong Thap Muoi area) and one in the South of Tien River (having an area of 73,074ha, lying between Tien River and Hau River). Dong Thap benefits from a large river, channel and spring system, frequently silt-aggraded soil, and permanently fresh and non-saline water source.
Climate
Dong Thap is in the tropical climate zone, consistently in the whole province. There are two evident seasons; rainy season from May to Nov, and dried season from December to April of the following year. The average temperature is 27oC, of which the highest is 34.3oC, and lowest is 21.8oC.
Tourism
Every year, Tien and Hau rivers provide alluvial soil for Dong Thap that is convenient to growing food and fruit plant. So this area is the granary of Vietnam. The province has potentiality of short day crops (sugar cane, cotton, tobacco, soil bean, and other fruit plants with the popular names of Cao Lanh mango, Chau Thanh longan, Lai Vung mandarin, Phong Hoa grape fruit.
From January to May every year when sky is clear, tourist would visit Tram Chim National Park. Tram Chim National Park is one of the few natural landscapes found today in Dong Thap Muoi. This Park meets the criterion on national ecological parks in terms of terrain, ecological landscape of the Mekong River floodplain and its lower basin. The best time to visit the Tram Chim National Park should be late April or early May, when it is a little bit cold. It is wonderful to get the view of thousands of cranes flying off into the sky in search of food at dawn and their returning to the nests. Tourists can admire the vast lotus and bonsai in Sa Dec Flower Garden. A forest of flowers of all colors and aroma are always available here.
Dong Thap has relic of Oc-Eo Culture in Go Thap, numerous historic remains and valuable places of scenic beauty like the Tomb of Junior Doctor Nguyen Sinh Sac, Go Thap Site, Xeo Quyt Relic which are being protected, preserved and step by step put on operation for economical and social development of the province.
Every year, visitors from all over visit Go Thap Archaeological Area to participate in Go Thap Festival – the ceremony dedicated to Lady Chua Xu (16th day of the 3rd lunar month), and the anniversary of the death of Doc Binh Kieu is commemorated on the 15th and 16th days of the 11th lunar month. Go Thap Festival Ceremony is celebrated to obtain peace and abundant crops.
Transportation
Cao Lanh City is 162km from Ho Chi Minh City. There are direct buses from Ho Chi Minh City, Mytho, Can Tho, Vinh Long, and Long Xuyen.
